The Sewer Monsters

The bad news was that I was out of town for Double Post Saturday so you have to get your fix today instead. All apologies... but the good news is you're getting TWO of the more repulsive stories in my collection, so it's not all bad I suppose. This yarn is apparently pretty notorious, I have seen it poorly reprinted in some 80's comic book before but in black and white. To truly appreciate this piece of work it needs to be seen in glorious gagging color.

From the July 1951 issue of Witches Tales #4

Wow, this one is really twisted! Does anyone else think that GCD has the info wrong for The Sewer Monsters credits though? I mean, Powell maybe had his hand in this but the monsters look alot more like Palais creations to me.

PLUS THEY HAVE PALAIS LISTED INCORRECTLY FOR ALL THE OTHER STORIES IN THAT ISSUE AS WELL. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT HE ILLUSTRATED THE ENTIRE ISSUE.

Yeah, the GCD entry on this issue is obviously messed up, I linked it still mainly for the cover art.

Good story, good art, with some great scenes in the sewers,i notice a theme in HARVEY stories;at the last minute, the bad guys reform and the heroes turn evil,i guess Harvey liked to do stories about class struggle, like a less classy Hammer.and by the way, whats with french people and sewers?

I wonder where you saw this reprinted in the 80s (as I am always on the lookout for pre-code reprints). AC Comics reprinted it in 1994 and I'd imagine that Eerie Publications may have done so as well but that would have been in the 70s and they almost surely would have re-done the art and changed the title, as they did with the numerous other Harvey stories they swiped (probably to avoid legal troubles).

Harvey is actually one of my favorite PCH publishers (despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that they were considered a poor-man's EC).

Always love those French sewer stories - the two that come to mind first are Ajax/Farrrel's Fiends From the Crypt and Dick Ayer's wonderful The Sewer Werewolves for Eerie Pubs.
Speaking of the latter, I think it would be interesting to post an original PCH story and Eerie's re-work of the same (i.e. they re-did "The Fruit of Death" as "Deadman's Tree")

Would you like to scan it in for us and email it to me?
